Paula's Choice Skin Perfecting 2% BHA Liquid Exfoliant is eight ingredients long, and one of them is salicylic acid at 2% held between pH 3.2 and 3.8. Because salicylic acid is oil-soluble, it works inside the pore lining rather than only on the surface — which is why it clears blackheads and congestion that a scrub cannot reach.

Green tea leaf extract calms the skin as the acid works, and there is no fragrance, no dye and no alcohol in the formula. Expect a purge in weeks two to four as existing congestion surfaces faster than usual; it passes, and quitting during it is the most common way people waste this product. Start at two or three nights a week and build up. Not suitable if you are allergic to aspirin.

Application

How to use it

1 At night, after cleansing and toner, on dry skin.
2 Apply a small amount with a cotton pad or fingertips, avoiding the eye area and lower lash line.
3 Do not rinse. Wait 10 to 20 minutes before the next step.
4 Start with two or three nights a week for the first month.
5 Build up gradually toward nightly only if your skin stays comfortable.
6 Wear sunscreen every morning without exception.

Night, building from 2 to 3 times weekly: Cleanser -> Toner -> 2% BHA Liquid -> wait 15 minutes -> Moisturizer

Other nights: Cleanser -> Toner -> Hydrating or brightening serum -> Moisturizer

Morning: Cleanser -> Serum -> Moisturizer -> Sunscreen

On BHA nights, keep everything else boring. A plain moisturizer over the top is the whole point. Vitamin C belongs in your morning routine, not the same slot as this.

Skin feels smoother and blackheads on the nose loosen.

Week 2 to 4

You may purge, with small spots surfacing faster than usual. This is normal and it passes.

Week 6 to 8

Pores look visibly smaller and breakouts are less frequent.

Week 12

Texture and tone settle.

The purge is the reason most people abandon this product, and abandoning it at week three is the single most expensive mistake you can make with it. Salicylic acid pushes existing congestion to the surface before it clears, so weeks two to four often look worse than when you started. If you are not prepared to ride that out, do not buy it. If you are, this is the most reliably effective exfoliant in the catalogue.

Avoid if you are allergic to aspirin, as salicylic acid is chemically related to it.
Avoid using it on the same night as the Ordinary AHA 30% peel or the COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid, as all three are treatment-strength acids.
Avoid layering it with a retinoid or benzoyl peroxide in the same routine while you are still building tolerance.
Avoid using it alongside the Ordinary glycolic toner on the same night.
Avoid if your barrier is currently damaged, peeling or stinging.
Stop using if irritation continues.

Can I use this with the COSRX BHA Blackhead Power Liquid?

Not in the same routine. Both are treatment-strength BHAs and stacking them will damage your barrier without clearing pores any faster. Pick one.

Paula's Choice say daily. Why do you say start at 2 to 3 nights?

Because daily is where you end up, not where you start. Most people who go straight to nightly quit within a month from irritation. Build up over four weeks and you will keep using it for years.

Is the purge real or am I breaking out?

A purge appears in your usual congested areas and clears within three to four weeks. New spots in places you never break out, or lasting past six weeks, is a reaction rather than a purge. Stop in that case.

Can I use it with vitamin C?

Not in the same slot. Put your vitamin C in the morning and this at night.

Is 30ml worth the price?

It is the travel size, so cost per ml is high. It is a sensible way to find out whether your skin tolerates it before committing to a full bottle.
